If you were seen with an owl you were thought to be a witch in the early ages. The Greek Goddess Athene chose an owl to be her pet. The Greek soldiers also thought that if an owl flew over them before battle they would have victory. Also, they had owls on their coins. In the early ages people thought if an owl hooted that there would be an immediate death. People also would place an owl on their door so no evil would come into their house. If you get drunk you can eat two raw owl eggs and it was supposed to cure your drunkeness. If a child ate two raw owl eggs it was supposed to mean they would never get drunk ever.
The Australian Masked Owl has a heart shaped face. They have a white chest with brown freckles on them. The females are larger than the males. They are a barn owl and they weight between one and two pounds. They are nocturnal and they eat rodents, birds, insect’s and bandicoots (the bandicoots look like rabbits).
Biak Scops Owl
They are 25 cm long which is less than a foot long. They are endangered and live in Indonesia on an island called Biak-Supiori. They are light brown and they have short brown tufts that look like ears. They are noctornal and they are hard to find because they are so rare.
Common Barn Owl
They have flat heart shaped faces. The girls are bigger than the boys and the babies are covered with downy feathers. They live in North and South America, Africa, Europe, India and Australia. They are nocturnal and eat one to two rodents per night. I think they are epic!
Desert Eagle Owl
The Desert Eagle Owl is known as the Pharaoh Eagle Owl. They like to eat squirrel, other birds, hedgehog, scorpions, baby deer, frogs and snakes. They live in cliffs, rocky mountain slopes and gorges. The Desert Eagle Owl is the largest owl in Europe. It has bright orange eyes.
Great Gray Owl
The Great Gray owl other wise known as the Great Gray Ghost are very large gray owls. Mostly in the Northern Hemisphere and they are active during the night, which makes them noctornal. They feed on hares, moles, shrews, weasles, gray jays, thrushes and grouses, small hawks and ducks. Predators of small or baby Great Grey Owl are bears, fishers which are like weasels, large hawks, and especially goshawks. In Harry Potter books and movies the Weasley's had a Great Grey Messenger Owl named Errol. Also, in Gaurdians of Ga'Hoole one of the main characters is a Great Grey Owl named Twilight.
Enggano Scops Owl
The Enggano Scops Owl are considered Near Threatened but not Endangered. They are found on the Island of Enggano in Indonesia. It's a dark brown owl with yellow - green eyes. It's face is flat and white. They are small and can move around quickly.It is thought to occupy forest edge and wooded areas.
Fraser's Eagle Owl
The Fraser's Eagle Owl makes a loud trill sound like a small engine and a normal hooting sound. The coloring of the owl is dark reddish brown as it goes down the colors get paler and eventually turns white. They are found mostly in Africa. Fraser's Eagle Owl is a nocturnal owl that only come out at night. They eat mice, squirrels, small birds, frogs, insects, and fruit bats, which they have to throw-up the bones, fur and feathers later in the form of a pellet. They are not endangered or threatened birds.
Himalayan Wood Owl
The Himalayan Wood Owl nests in a tree hole so they can protect their young. They are a noctornal non-migratory owl which eats mostly rodents. They like to swallow their prey whole. When they fly they are kind of heavy and slow but silent. The female owls are fatter than the male owls. The fledgelings leave when they are one year old. During the day they sleep on a tree close to a trunk and some birds mob them.
Indian Eagle Owl
The Indian Eagle Owl also known as the Bengal or Rock Eagle Owl is found in South Asia. They were earlier known as a sub-species of the Eurasian Eagle Owl. They lay three to four creamy white eggs and they do not nest in trees. They have to feed and take care of their chicks for six months. The eat peacocks, little spotted owls and they tear up their prey instead eating it whole. The young owlets will puff themselves to make themselves look big.
Javan Scops Owl
They are rare and found in Indonesia. The Javan Scops Owl is nocturnal. They are 16 to 18 cm long. The Javan Scoops Owl is a forest-dwelling owl. They have a rusty brown color on top with puffy eyebrows. They are silent and loosing their habitat. They don't usually talk but when they do, they go "poo-poo."
Koepckes Screech Owl
The Koepckes Screech Owl is not Endangered. They have a very large range. They range in South America from West Peru to Northwest Bolivia. The female is larger and fatter than the males. Their coloring is a lighter brown. The eat mostly insects.
Laughing Owl
They have dark orange eyes. The female is larger than the male. They're call is like a young puppy repeating his bark. It is said that they went extinct in July, 1914. However, in 1985 it was said that Laughing Owl eggs pieces were found. Also, in 2000 a ornithologist from New Zealand reported that he heard something like a mysterious mad man laughing, which made he think it might be the extinct Laughing Owl.
